Cooley and Marion Clark, decided to determine who would get control of the 100,000-acre ranch they had jointly acquired. They agreed to a card game of “Seven Up,” and the winner would take all. The tale goes that when Clark was down to his last card, he exclaimed, “If you can show low, you win.” Cooley then revealed the deuce of clubs and retorted, “Show low it is!” Cooley won the ranch, and the settlement was named “Show Low.”
