The White Mountains, named for the mountainous region in the eastern part of Arizona, extends from I-40 in the north to Rt. 70 in the south. The region borders the Gila National Forest in New Mexico to the east and Rt. 60 to the west. The area is home to the White Mountain and San Carlos Apache Tribes. The Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest provides numerous opportunities for exploring the surrounding landscape. The main towns are Show Low, Pinetop- Lakeside, and Greer in the north, and Globe in the southeast.
Although a good 4 to 5 hour drive from the Phoenix Valley, the White Mountains are well worth the trip. One popular location is the Big Lake Recreation Area located near Greer. Five charming campgrounds surround Big Lake, known for the best trout fishing in Arizona. The majority of the campgrounds are located high in the mountains, nestled between peaceful mountain streams. Some of my favorite sites include the Apache Trout Campground, Lyman Lake State Park, and Granville Campground. If you are truly looking to get away for some peace and quiet, look no further than the White Mountains.
