The Rim region is named for the Mogollon Rim, a 200 mile geological feature cutting across the Colorado Plateau. The Tonto National Forest, Arizona’s largest forest, as well as parts of the Coconino and Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest provide ample outdoor activities. This area is a preferred destination in the summer months as Phoenicians try to escape the heat from the Valley of the Sun. The main towns include Payson and Show Low.
Popular areas include the Rim Lakes Recreation Area, Woods Canyon Lake, and the Roosevelt and Apache Lake Recreational Areas. Both areas are an outdoorsman’s paradise with hundreds of miles of trails, numerous lakes for fishing and boating, and numerous delightful campgrounds. Some of my favorite spots include Cholla Campground on Roosevelt Lake and Aspen Campground near Woods Canyon Lake. Whether you are looking to get out of the heat in the summer, or explore the snow in the winter, the Rim Region will satisfy your needs for the outdoors.
